What is a Company Certificate, and What Does It Document?

A company certificate (firmaattest) is documentation from the Foretaksregisteret (Register of Business Enterprises) that shows key registered information about an enterprise. It is often used with banks, customers, suppliers, and authorities to confirm identity and formal matters.

What Does a Company Certificate Contain?

The content depends on the organisational form, but may include the enterprise name, organisation number, business address, board, managing director, signatory rights, and procuration. The certificate shows registered details at the time of issue.

A company certificate must not be confused with annual accounts, a tax certificate, or proof of financial solidity. It does not document that the business pays its bills or fulfils all its obligations.

When Should It Be Verified?

Request an updated company certificate before entering into major agreements, establishing banking relationships, or when you are unsure who is authorised to sign. Check that the organisation number is identical to the counterparty's, and read whether signatory rights must be granted by one person or several jointly.

An old certificate may have been correct when issued, but roles and authorisations may have changed since. Therefore, always use up-to-date business information for important decisions.
